kat_2012.log (pre post year report)

I'm thinking about writing on how bad this year has been for me. Kobe once said that a season without a ring is a wasted season. However, I'm not Kobe. So instead of treating this year as a flop, I am making myself believe otherwise.
Let me start off with the fact that I received a MEMO, re: habitual tardiness, at work. I've always been a fan of clutchness and I like to challenge myself by getting to work right on the dot but last month I got the shock of my life. I found myself having a memo from the HR. (finding memo). So basically I got this paper that was signed by many bosses and it kinda says something like, "We have a new and stricter rule. Get your ass to work on time." I'm not saying that I didn't deserve it. I mean, you know how I roll.

And then there's the actual work. Hmm so I've been dealing with a new team and totally different projects. Everything has been unfamiliar. It's like I had to start all over again with my skills and exp level. I can't say this was a bad move because I know that in the long run, it's going to be worth it. (it's going to be really advantageous,  I tell ya). Meanwhile, I just have to go with the flow for now and use every exp to my advantage. Who says I'm impatient now ha?

Aside from the tardiness issue and the learning curve, I feel like have not been able to impress my boss that much. Technically, maybe I am doing just fine like I finish things on time and contribute efficiently. However, my boss and I had some issues that I won't elaborate anymore but basically it's like this... I am stubborn and he got stressed. Haha.

Lets not forget that earlier this year I had to deal with some long distance thing that is super new to me. OMG. I may have cried almost every night thinking about it. Well not really. (hyperbole, anyone?) Anyway, so maybe it's not a challenge for everyone but it was a struggle for me. It still is but luckily I'm learning how to manage it. And guess what? We're halfway there.

I have about two months left before the world ends. I mean, before the year ends. In basketball, a lot can happen in two seconds so I guess I can't  say the game is over just yet.

Programming Blues

As a programmer who's not an expert but has been around for a little while, I fear that keeping up with technology might become difficult for me in the future.

It's not that it's hard to keep up with the new technologies, it's more of that by the time I've invested into mastering a technology and be really proficient in it, something new comes along.

*insert Kanye song here*
And it all falls down.

I'm all for new things. Every close friend of mine knows that. I AM A SUCKER FOR NEW THINGS. (I do say this a lot of times.) New things excite me. But whenever I start on something new and do something about it, I feel less productive. It's like taking a huge step back when it comes to productivity.

Sometimes it demotivates me.

That's the sad part about it.

Another depressing thing about learning programming is when you realize how far behind you are when you zoom out of your own little world. You'll be surprised how many technologies are there and you'll always feel like a NOOB.

Every. Single. Time.

I guess they're right. Learning never stops.

I Am Sorry Billie Joe

By the time I finish this post, it's probably October already. I know this is so overused but, YES I am trying to wake myself up when September ends.

As part of my OCTOBERSELF project, I have created a proposal for myself.

----------------------------------------

Objective:

  • To apply a patch on the bugs that have been waiting for fixes for some time now

  • To update and improve the system

Design:
The design is divided into 2 modules: redeemSelf() which is sort of a FIX to improve the BUGS currently experienced by the subject, and the improveSelf() which is not work-related but will help improve the subject in the long run.

Duration:
1 month

Description:
Project RedeemSelf()

1. Perfect attendance and no TARDINESS
- Wake up 7.45 AM :D
- Breakfast, if possible

2. Work excitement
- how (?)
- log daily knowledge/skill increments haha! (SHET DUNNO HOW)
- finish ahead of schedule (DO NOT DELAY. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BE CLUTCH.)
Project ImproveSelf()

1. Driving lessons (long overdue)
- enroll!!!

2. online (MITx and shit)
- read, study and do homeworks/projects

3. RASPBERRY PI! media streamer :D
- first project for my baby pi **to buy: usb keyboard
- might underachieve... :( for the first month...set up!

----------------------------------------

Pardon my use of the ANNOYING "wake me up when September ends" line. I know Billy Joe won't be proud but I just had to use it because it really fits the situation.

Gangnam Style In The Rain

Don't wait for the storm to pass. Learn to dance in the rain.

The problem with me dancing in the rain is that I have two left feet.

So yeah, it will take a while.

Please be patient with me.

Happy 256th!

It's the 256th day of the year and I spent all day coding. I mean, not really. No one does that!

Anyway, I spent this day getting rid of the hang of jquery and jquery-ui, and then integrating them into my Drupal test site. OMG. It is very daunting especially when the codes are written in a single line. WHAT HAPPENED TO USING NEW LINES AND INDENTION? I find it hard also to test but thank god for Firebug. Sometimes I can't make something work and then eventually it would turn out to be just some noob mistake.

$("#kat").hide(); ...in shame. WHEW.

Anyway, HAPPY PROGRAMMER'S DAY!

Hug your favorite developer. Hug me. #LOL

If only I have so much time to write but then again I am a busy person. If you're a programmer like me, grab another coffee and get back to work. Those bugs are not going away unless you fix them.

Lakers Reloaded

I'm so excited for the Lakers this season. :D

So they have a new broadcasting partner,Time Warner Cable. I read somewhere that they will be making two exclusive Lakers channels for the next coming seasons. The bad news is I'm from the Philippines and I can only watch on BTV via Sky Cable. Anyway, here's a sneak peak at their new TV graphics:

I know. It looks so awesome and it makes me feel terrible that I'm living in the Philippines. LOL. It reminds me of NBA 2K's graphics.

The Lakers also added assistant coaches Eddie Jordan, Bernie Bickerstaff and Steve Clifford to Mike Brown's coaching staff. I can't write anything about them because I don't really know them. You can check this out for more info: NEW ASSISTANT COACHES

So aside from the coaches, of course, the Lakers upgraded their roster. Here's the new lineup.

DO NOT BE SAD

I'm sad but I can't be sad. I want to rant but my default rant absorber doesn't accept bookings today.

I even googled "i want to rant" and this is what i found: www.yourrant.com HAHA! Well, it needs registration and shit so I didn't bother signing up anymore.

Anyway, my brain is just not working hard enough. Scumbag brain is not cooperating!

This Drupal thing is making me look stupid. I hate following thorough instructions. I can't explore enough. There's just so many things to know with so little time. I mean, new terms, new concepts, new software package!

Frustration is kicking in. As usual.

Keep Calm And Keep Ballin

A lot of people have been telling me to try. TRY HARDER.

try++;

Yes, yes and yes. I get it. Or so I thought. Or I just hate the fact that I am being scolded.

But I get it. In fact, I've memorized all their lines.
"There's no harm in trying."

"Trying is NOT futile."

"A winner never stops trying"

...the list goes on and on and on but I keep on ignoring them.

Why?

I don't know. Maybe I'm just stubborn like that. Maybe I'm just not a "winner" material. Maybe I am. Maybe I lack motivation. Maybe I'm just afraid of failure. I don't like pressure. Wait, sometimes I like it though. I am not confident but I let other people think otherwise. I know I'm smart. I mean, I'm no genius but I sure am not stupid.

There's a lot of reasons why I am not in the pursuit of, let's say, "trying". Just like how Dirk is satisfied with where he is in Dallas. Just like how Duncan did not test the free agency market. Errr, this is not a good analogy. These are veteran players and I'm just in my 3rd year in the "league".

Where I am right now is not that bad. Well, it may not be the best as well but it isn't as bad as it may look like.

Ricky Rubio was #5. He didn't play in the NBA immediately. He was not ROY but he did well during his first season. At some point he got injured but I heard he'll be ready for the next season. I don't know how he will fare in his next year but the future is definitely bright for him.*wink wink* Plus, he is happy and Khan is not a bad GM at all. The Timberwolves' market is not as huge as the Lakers' but I like their chances. And oh, Rubio's salary is above average for a contract year. I think only Tyreke, Griffin (Errr, this man is special) and James Harden have bigger paychecks than him.

I say, I'm gonna keep ballin' until I don't feel like playing for this team anymore.

...or if someone offers me something that I cannot resist. #YouKnowWhatItIs

I am Kat, the living epitome of "Juan Tamad". I am waiting for a ripened guava to drop in my mouth. And I'm going to get scolded again after someone reads this.

ToS

My ears stopped listening after the words,

"I didn't sign up for this".

The rest of the sentences were like fireworks of harsh words that went in and out of my ears.

The statements were too hurtful to be quoted completely but the words are too strong that even without the statements, I can still remember how it felt while they were being spoken.

The words were so strong even my mind was not able to store it. It's just too heavy to take. And on the other hand, too heavy for you to lift.

I don't care what you say. Call me whatever you want. Too much drama? Maybe. Fuck it, this is my blog and I'm free to let it all out here.

Attention Whore

Hola!

This is a post using my phone because I am that addicted to sharing.

Anyway, I am currently here in our province being lazy after drinking last night.

I just want to say that...

I am an attention whore. Hahahaha. OMG. I just realized that I literally tweet everything that is happening to me. Even the littlest thoughts which I think I shall never share. Even the lyrics of the song that is currently stuck in my head. When I am overjoyed, I tweet in all caps. When I am sad, I post short tweets.

I don't know if people get annoyed already. They can unfollow any time they want to. :P

And the fact that I shared here that I am writing through my phone is a proof in itself that I do, indeed, overshare. Even the nonsense ones.

Feel Good Inc.

Funny how those people who don't always talk to you suddenly send you sms or tweets asking if everything is okay. I guess people are naturally good.

Of course there are those who by default are always there to show you that they care as well.

It just feels good to know that there are people who care. Regardless of how frequent you keep in touch or how little your conversations were before.

Switching From SVN to Git

So my boss asked us to change our version control system from SVN to Git. The way I understand it, the biggest difference between the two lies in the way they store the data. In SVN, only the central repository stores the complete history and data while in Git all clients have a copy of their own as well.

SVN

  • has more user-friendly UI

  • easier to manage because there is only one legit copy of the whole system

  • since it has a single central repo, it is easier to give read and write access controls for the entire project

Git

  • if in case the data are lost due to system failure, only the changes which were unique to that repository are lost

  • a complete copy of the repository data stored locally, thereby making access to file extremely fast

  • faster since all operations are local (except some) there is no network latency involved

  • repository and working directory sizes are smaller compared to SVN

  • do not have to give commit access to other people in order for them to use the versioning features

Android Life: One ROM At A Time

I finally was able to root my phone and flash a custom ROM to it. I guess I am finally living the Android life to its maximum potential.

To those of you who are like me a few weeks ago. Here are the basic terms that you need to know:

ROOTING

Rooting your device means having a "superuser" rights and permissions to your Android’s software. For programmers, it's synonymous to entering the "su" in the Linux command line. For the non-programmers, think of it as a superpower which will enable you to do tasks that have been inherently blocked by the mobile phone makers for siplicity and security. (ie. increase the performance of your Android phone and load custom themes and software)

ROM

ROM literally stands for Read Only Memory. There are 2 types of ROM: stock and custom. Stock is the original version that comes with your phone when you buy it. Meanwhile, custom ROM is customized by someone in some way. (Remember that Android is an open source project so all of the source code is openly available for anyone to download, tweak, and reproduce.)

FLASHING

Flashing is easy to understand when you already know what ROM is. It is basically just LOADING a different ROM into your phone. Think of the word FLASHING as LOADING. Ugh. I know. The terms confused me for a while too.

Now that we all know the terms, I'd like to share with you the basic steps that helped me finish the process.

  1. go here http://forum.xda-developers.com and type "Root <PHONE_MODEL>" in the search bar
EXAMPLE: Root Samsung Galaxy Note OR Root GT-N7000

  2. follow the rooting instructions
NOTE:  The steps would require you to download some files to your phone.

  3.  research on the available custom ROMs for your phone model
    EXAMPLE: http://rootgalaxynote.com/category/galaxy-note-roms

  4. go here http://forum.xda-developers.com and type "Flash <ROM_THAT_YOU_LIKE>" in the search bar
EXAMPLE of flashing instructions: click this

  5. follow the flashing instructions again

...and you're done!

As for me, my phone now runs faster and has a better battery life. The custom ROM cut the “junk” out of the software to free up significant amount of memory. It also optimized the (kernel) software to improve the performance and even the UI.

NOW I AM A SATISFIED ANDROID USER. :-)

JUST REMEMBER TO FOLLOW THE STEPS VERY CAREFULLY OR YOU'LL END UP WITH A BRICK.

If you want to know more about rooting and flashing a custom ROM, just check the XDA Developers Forum. It's all there.

Let's all live the Android life one ROM at a time!

I Think I'm In Love

When life gives you lemons...

ARGH!

I hate cliches. They suck  and they're overused but hey, most of the time they tell you the truth. And I don't know how else to start this so excuse me while I start off with a cliche.

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

With that, I can say that I have NOT been working for the past months. I mean, yeah, I do complain A LOT. I can't help it. I'm a whiner. I complain about why our work schedule is just "semi-flexible" and not literally FLEXIBLE. I don't like the fact that I have to follow a new set of coding standards. I curse when I can't make things happen. I get annoyed by the changes in the business rules. I complain about my salary. I argue about this and that. But deep inside, I know that I like what I'm doing.

I am enjoying this.

I AM ENJOYING EVERY BIT OF IT.

I guess I just like to be challenged. I find joy in building things. I like programming. I like developing. I like thinking. Yup, I know it seems ironic because I'm such a brat when it comes to dealing with just about everything. But believe it or not, I like challenges. I have very little patience though so in effect I am able to either FORCE myself to do it or quit. I always feel bad when I end up choosing the latter.

Anyway, I once had a chance to talk to an officemate over a beer about passion. Yes, PASSION. Don't ask. I know it's weird. He told me nothing is impossible when you have passion. You don't just do things to earn, you got to love what you're doing. Everything will follow afterwards.

I don't know if I have the same passion as he has. He's got some INTENSE PASSION right there-- a Kobe-like passion, if I may say. One thing that he made me realize about myself right now is that I'm sure that this is what I want. I mean, I don't even know if I'm good at this but I am honestly having fun even with all the headaches and heartaches that come with it. Damn it, I think I love my job. Tell me if this is not love, what is?

Cars and Flowcharts

While i was on my way home, I had some sort of epiphany.

I
Am
An
Irresponsible
Brat
.

Well, for those who know me well, this is not something new.

I make stupid and immature decisions. I dont think about the consequences of my actions. I dont save for the future. I have no concrete career path in mind.

Fuck.

Dear present Kat,

No one will help you but yourself. People and friends are there for support but you should not put the burden on them. Start making smart decisions. Save up. Going with the flow is nice but you gotta have something in outline view. You make awesome flowcharts for work why dont you start charting the flow of your life. Plan. Not everything should be in autopilot mode.

Grow up.

Plan B is not plan Batman...as in "bahala na si Batman".

You cant always be a taxi driver's passenger. You have to know where you are going. You have to know the way. Get your own car and drive there yourself. Take your ass to where you want to be. Gas up. Pay the toll. Be in control. Be responsible.

Sincerely,
Kat's matinong side

Weekend Internet Havoc

So if you're an internet junkie, you would've noticed how everything good was down during the weekend. Instagram, Reddit, Pinterest, Netflix, Foursquare etc. are some of the sites that were affected.

THE STORM
You probably heard the story.

Massive storms wiped out power in the Washington D.C. area causing several servers to go down.

Server  down, man down.

One of the casualties is Amazon. As I've just recently learned, Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (or Amazon EC2) powers sites like Netflix, Pinterest and Instagram. These  websites (and many others) rely on EC2's web services so if Amazon's servers are down... their supported sites will be down as well.

So, uhm... yeah, that's the reason why we were not able to use Instagram last Saturday.

TL:DR ?

Server down -> web down.

THE IRONY
Google just recently announced Compute Engine, its infrastructure that will directly compete with industry heavyweight, Amazon EC2. #LeSigh

THE LEAP SECOND

Reddit, Foursquare, Mozilla and some other sites were down yesterday. (Sunday PI time) Apparently, this is due to the clocks being altered by the experts.

WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH IT?
Hmmm... Atomic clocks are the standard time of the world. Every once in a while, a leap second is applied to the atomic clocks because the Earth's rotation speed changes irregularly. Timekeepers do this in order to keep the clocks in sync with the slowing rotation of the Earth.

SO WHAT HAPPENED?
Some computer systems found the changes in time weird so they choked up.

Check out LeBron to know more about choking.

Computers use the NTP to keep themselves aligned with atomic clocks but with the extra second added, the components of the system (I read it's Linux?) did not know how to handle the changes.

TL:DR ?

Earth's rotation slowed down -> timekeepers sync atomic clocks -> NTP follows atomic clock -> systems based on NTP get confused -> sites down

On the other hand, since this has been happening for quite a while now, Google found a way to deal with it.

Check out their solution, it's called leap smear.

Congrats LeBron

Congrats, Bron!

As much as it hurts my heart to say this, LeBron worked his ass off this year. He's a good player. We all know that. I just... I don't know. He played hard. Congrats. I just can't be genuinely happy for him but I know he worked hard for this.

Just please stop saying stupid things during interviews. Please?

As for the Thunder, I feel bad for KD.

Kobe and the Lakers broke his heart during the 2010 playoffs.

Mavs defeated them during the 2011 WCF.

And now... LeBron and the Heat won against them during the 2012 finals.

Every year there's an improvement. They are still very young. They'll come back hungrier. Plus, I would like to see them in the finals against the Bulls...

after Kobe gets (at least) his 6th.

LeBron-Hating On Apple Just Because I Want To

Apple doesn't specifically get it done impressively on the tech side.

They just announce it the loudest.

Then patent it.

Then sue over it.

Then having the "lawsuit" as their proof, fanboys start claiming that Apple actually invented it.

That has been the routine for years. They take what other people have been doing for ages, stamp a pretty cool logo on it and sell it as something "revolutionary"?

* Apple events remind me of LeBron's "The Decision". Maybe that's why I am so annoyed. *

Fanboys think it's revolutionary because it's the first time that Apple implemented it when in fact it has been there in other OS for years while they're stuck in their own little Apple world.

To be fair, the new MBP's Retina display is their killer feature right now. Apart from that, the others are just *yawn*. I would like to specifically say that the "Power Nap" is old news for Windows users.

And about the iOS 6... Facebook integration is old news for Android users too. iMaps (I don't know how it's called...I just want to call it iMaps) in 3D? Pretty cool. I just hate that they gave the impression that they developed their own maps service. They didn't actually build something plus I heard their maps data will be provided by TomTom. Great innovation, right?

I could go on and on with this but, no. I have other things to do. The main point of this blog is that I  just hate all the fuss about the revolutionary claim and Google needs to get their marketing shit together.

Google Driving Like A Sir

I've just recently installed Google Drive on my PC. So far, it has been a fairly good experience. Storage plus office suite on the cloud couldn't get any better than this! :-)

It seems like Google hit two birds (Dropbox and Office 365) with one stone with this one.

Oh and did I mention that upon installing Drive, you'll get 5gb for free? And that does not include the files that you're going to be creating with Docs.

PS. Dropbox only gives 2gb for free.

Curiosity Killed The Kat

Things to study during free time!

By the end of this year, I should be able to create an Android app of my own.

Also, I want to know more about node.js and HTML 5. The training last time proved that these two can be very helpful in both web and mobile development.

Android SDK

node.js

HTML 5

I want to learn everything.

It only makes me sad that my brain can only hold so much information. #scumbagbrain

Problem Solver

Nobody said you can't cut the puzzle pieces when they don't fit together, right? You can break a Rubik's cube apart if you want to.

As long as the players still enjoy and agree, you can solve the puzzles whichever way you want to. Either that or you could just throw them away and get an easier one.

Kobe Bryant Is My Favorite Avenger

I was supposed to write something here about all the emotions that I felt today regarding the Lakers' round 2 playoffs elimination but then again, it would just be another emo post. There are already too many brokenhearted LAL fans out there so I am choosing not to be part of the horde.

As always, I admire Kobe for his "never say die" and optimistic attitude. He didn't go down without a fight today. He led his teammates. He motivated them. Some answered his call but unfortunately some did not.

I was able to read some of the things that Kobe said during the presser:
"I'm not fading into the shadows. I'm not going anywhere. We're not going anywhere. Come hell or high water, we're going to be there again"

"It's just something about the Lakers organization..."

"This isn't like the Bulls beat the Pistons and the Pistons disappear...I don't buy that sh*t."

"Management has done a phenominal job, scouting has done a phenominal job & they will again."

He answered with strong conviction.

At 33 years old, he still has no plans of  backing down any time soon.  He even told the press to "put your house on it".

Minus the powered suit of armor, I can easily picture Kobe being Iron Man -- the swagger, the killer instinct, the IQ level. I've seen him carry the Lakers to victory on numerous occasions. On the other hand, Kobe can fail miserably too, like Tony Stark. But failure never stops him from doing it again the next day because he believes in himself and his capacity.

That is the heart and will of a true champion. That is the reason why I admire Kobe.

Ps. If you've been living under a rock, Kobe did not die. The Lakers just got eliminated in the playoffs. Sorry if it sounded like Kobe retired or something. HAHA!

Will The Real Spoiled Brat Please Stand Up?

The Manual Of The Spoiled Brat

The spoiled brat expects the world to be handed to him on a silver platter. He doesn't believe that he has to work hard for anything.

The spoiled brat wants things in an instant. Patience is not in his vocabulary.

The spoiled brat wants so many things. He cannot distinguish a "want" from a "need".

The spoiled brat thinks that the world will always make things happen for him. He never  adjusts to challenging events as they happen.

The spoiled brat wants to be always on the winning side. He doesn't understand that life is unfair.

My Long Weekend Was As Boring As This Post

I tried to be productive during the long weekend but I failed

...

..

.

miserably :|

Please see image below for the graphical representation of my long weekend.

I know I didn't do much so I made a list of some of the new and interesting stuff that I learned...perhaps to make myself believe that I did something worthwhile the whole weekend. HAHA!

#heylookimtryingtomakemyselfbelievethatiwasusefulthewholetime

I Learned How To Be A Good Tetris Battler

So I started playing this FB game during the Holy Week and I'm rank #16 now :) I actually reached rank 20 but I lost a couple of stars lately. Yeah, it happens to the best of us and it's called being on a SLUMP.

Best Record: 58 lines sent :) #soproudofmyself

I Learned That Bynum Is Such A Douche

Unfortunately, I watched the Lakers lose 2 straight games during the holidays. I watched how Bynum got ejected because of his own stupidity vs. the Rockets. I saw how Kobe Bryant suited up on the sideline against the Suns. The Lakers lost both games respectively. Next game is tomorrow vs. NOH. If the Lakers don't win, I'm going to hate them forever. PLEASE BE A GOOD BOY BYNUM!

I Learned How To Appreciate Music Because Of AI

I started watching Idol again when I had some alone time during my stay in you-know-where-it-is. I started rooting for Hollie immediately. I liked her, I mean, I still like her but she's been a little off lately. (YESSSSS. Musically inclined???) I feel like she's going home in a little while unless she bounces back big time. I'm beginning to like Skylar too. And of course, Colton Dixon. :) I watched his audition video and I feel sorry for his sister. I feel like his sister wanted it more than he did back then.

I Learned How To Be Awesomely Good At Draw Something

Yes. I am on it! I finally gave in to the Draw Something craze. I drew a lot of stuff during the weekend. I know deep down that I am not ARTISTIC but I'm AWESOMELY GOOD in this game so I am posting my drawings here with all humility. HAHAHA!

Please click on my drawings! PLEAAAASE! PRETTY PLEAAAASE.

I Found A Hobby And It's Called Fencing

Yes! I think I'm going to finally be able to try out fencing next month! I wanted to learn archery before but I figured it would be very mainstream because of the whole Hunger Games craze. Kidding :P Archery is a little pricey. I got very cheap fencing lessons because one of my officemates recommended her college varsity fencing coach. He talked to me during the weekend and I got a pretty good discount. En garde!

WARNING: BORING STUFF BELOW

not that everything above the warning is interesting...

I Found Out Something Cool About PHP
I accidentally read something about PHP too during the vacation. Yup, you read that right. ACCIDENTALLY. I don't read about programming languages during non-working days :P

Anyway, so I learned that in PHP 5.4 we can already construct arrays in simpler ways like the ones below:
$lakers = ["kobe", "pau", "bynum", "sessions", "metta"];
$players = ["kobe" => 24, "sessions" => 7];

It's so much easier, right? The classic way is still retained so you need not worry about your old codes when migrating to 5.4.

So another GOOD thing that they added on 5.4 is the support for array dereferencing directly from a function call. Prior to version 5.4 you had to store the returning value from a function into a variable, and then use the variable and "explode".

So instead of the CLASSIC way:
$lakers = "kobe metta pau";
$players = explode(" ", $lakers);
echo $players[0]; // output: kobe
echo $pieces[2]; // output: pau

This could be shortened to:
$lakers = "kobe metta pau";
echo explode(" ", $lakers)[0]; // output: kobe

Pretty awesome right? It saves a little bit of memory and you wont run out of variable names.

----

So there you go! My weekend is this post :) Metaphorically.

Long and boring.

2048x1536

Apple just announced that their latest iPad will have a 2048x1536 pixel Retina display. Imagine, that's a total 3.1 million pixels in a full color IPS screen while 1080p has 2.9 million pixels only. It's quite the best  resolution there is among the tablets so far. DAMN. HOT. HOT. DAMN.

So, is it worth the upgrade? If you are going to buy the iPad for the first time and you have every peso to spend, then you might find the "new iPad" a worthy purchase. For iPad2 owners, it might not be very practical to upgrade unless you're in love with retina display so much. So if you don't care about higher resolutions, iPad2 might be just right for you. Plus, you get to save 5K or so because I heard  the iPad2 prices are going down soon.

Anyway, going back to the fun stuff... Before the announcement, people have been guessing how Apple will call their new iPad. They have been calling it iPad HD, iPad 2s, iPad 3 but trolling Apple just called it "the new iPad".

Very crafty, right?

For what it's worth, Apple did not only improve the iPad's display, it also upgraded its processor to A5X. Its CPU is still dual-core. Only the GPU has been upgraded to quad-core. People might mistake it as having a quad-core processor. You know it's Apple, so their statements are quite misleading. I mean confusing. Sorry. :P

My Sonnet 18: Matrixed

Hola, tinola!

I'm not a die-hard Shakespeare fan. I am really bad at poem interpretation. But for once, I want to make myself believe that I do appreciate sonnets... Hmm, just a tad.  So, I came across a really awesome Shakespeare piece today.  I bet Sir William would want to punch me in the face for describing his work as "awesome" but anyway...
SONNET 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

Cool eh?

Meanwhile, here's my version of Sonnet 18:

Ha! Very artistic and pretty straightforward right? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Fact: Compare and contrast matrix is my second favorite tool next to Venn diagrams. These tools make my life easier.

Hi thee. :P

Chicken, Moodle, Soup

So my first project for this year involves an opensource LMS. Basically it's just a web tool that manages a learning environment. We're just in the early stages of the development so I won't be able to share much about it. During the initial r&d phase, we needed to prove that the system can support the features presented to us. So we worked on a prototype.

I installed the package in both Windows and Linux (CentOS) and determined the capabilities of the system. I was also able to create custom modules, set the needed configurations and security settings, tailor the system according to the rules presented and more. After some studying and tweaking...

Voila!

We will be kicking off our actual development in a few weeks.

I'm geeeeeeeeeeeeekcited!

Even though everything is new to me, I'm really super excited. As in! The language is still the same but the rest of the frameworks and technologies that I will be using this year will be more challenging. Not that my tasks before were not challenging enough...there's just some significant learning curve that I have to deal with. If you know what I mean.

Anyway, I did realize one thing while I am on this shit: I'm a sucker for new things.

Like for real, for real. I mean, I love new things. I love learning and discovering new stuff. They make me happy... like a fat kid loves cake.

Yeah. Sorry for the 50 Cent reference. It sucks. I suck at writing. I don't even know why I am blogging. HAHAHAHAHA!

My Absolute Value Theory

The absolute value |x| of a real number x is the numerical value of a real number without regard to its sign. In simpler terms,

it is the distance of x from zero.

From an algebraic perspective, it looks like this:

If x ≥ 0, then |x| = x; if x < 0, then |x| = −x

Confusing? Yeah.

The -x makes it seem like the result is negative but "−x" must be interpreted as "the opposite of x".

In reality, you just have to make the negative number positive and retain the number if it is positive.

One random day, I realized that the absolute theory can be applied to our daily existence. It has taught me two things in life:

1. that one can turn any negative x to positive

So, x may represent any circumstance that is or has a negative impact to your life. One can simply turn it into something positive by putting bars. In this case, bars may represent your effort to turn negative things to positive.

2.  distance is never negative.

I have no explanation for #2. Math says it is never negative. Math is an absolute truth. Math works, bitches!

Life Refactoring

I was actually thinking of a good workaround to improve my overall perspective in life or..well, life itself. While I was trying to figure out the things that I need to sort out, I realized that a pretty nice patch is not the answer to my problem. haha. reFUCKtoring REFACTORING is the solution.

A patch is a workaround or a temporary solution to a system's problem. (If you don't like my definition, you can Google it. Go ahead, I won't mind.) Being the impatient person that I am, I know this may sound weird but I don't like a temporary solution to the things that I need to fix anymore. I want something long-term. I want something legen... wait for it... dary. Wait, seriously, I realized that I don't need the quick and dirty solution. I need some refactoring. Yes. You heard it from me... life refactoring.

According to this shit:
Refactoring is the art of reworking your code into a more simplified or efficient form in a disciplined way.

For more info about refactoring, click this shit. Why am I oversharing? HAHAHAHA!

Anyway, so being the weird me, I came up with something that you won't actually imagine me doing: real world application of the concepts of refactoring.

The concepts of refactoring are relatively simple compared to, let's say, Brownian Motion. But anyway, my point is, I would just like to share my life refactoring ideas with you. If anyone's even reading this. Why am I such a boring blogger?

Anyway...

Refactoring is rethinking.

Some time last year, my life got shattered a little bit so I need to re-think and restructure my goals and priorities. This year's a brand new year and I need to start anew.

Refactoring is done in small steps.

Yup. Slowly but surely I need to eliminate the annoying habits that I still have. I'll start with my tardiness and then to x... x+1...x+2. Fuck. #whatthefuckamiwriting

Refactoring is simplifying.

Part of the rethinking process is simplifying. I guess I have to kind of reduce the complexity of my thoughts. WHAT??? Seriously, I just have to breakdown the tasks that I need to accomplish into smaller pieces. Mini goals = More fun!

Refactoring is proactive.

I told you I want something long-term. I want to be prepared for the future. YEHESSS. This is the mature Kat and I'm going to call her Kat 2.0 :)

Refactoring is a disciplined way to improve productivity.

Actually the whole point of this blog is this. I just want to come up and follow some kind of protocols in order for me to become a more productive and better person in the coming years.
